Getting Started
How much does Orangetheory cost?
Pricing varies by location. Typical ranges: Basic (4 classes/month) $59–$79, Elite (8 classes/month) $99–$119, Premier (unlimited) $159–$179. Many studios offer founders rates $20–$40 less for new studio openings.
See full pricing guideIs the first class free?
Yes. Every Orangetheory studio offers a free intro class for first-time visitors. You’ll get a loaner heart rate monitor and full access to the workout. No purchase required.
Find a studio near youWhat should I bring to my first class?
Athletic shoes (running shoes are best), a water bottle, and a towel. The studio provides everything else including a heart rate monitor for your first class. Wear moisture-wicking athletic clothing.
First class guideIs Orangetheory good for beginners?
Absolutely. Every exercise can be modified, and the coach will help you find appropriate paces and weights. The heart rate system automatically adjusts to your personal fitness level. Many members started with zero gym experience.
What’s the cancellation policy?
Most studios require 8 hours notice to cancel without a fee (some require 12 hours). Late cancellations and no-shows incur a fee of $12–$18. For membership cancellation, most studios require 30 days written notice. Some contracts may have early termination fees.
Can I freeze my membership?
Yes. Most studios allow you to freeze your membership for a set period (often 30–90 days) for a reduced monthly fee. This is useful for travel, injury, or other breaks. Ask your studio about their specific freeze policy.
Classes & Workouts
What’s the difference between 2G and 3G classes?
2G (two-group) splits the class between treadmill and floor/rower. 3G (three-group) adds a dedicated rowing station, so you rotate through tread, rower, and floor. 2G gives more tread time; 3G gives more rowing practice. Both are effective.
Class types explainedHow long is an Orangetheory class?
Standard classes are 60 minutes (including warm-up and cool-down). Some studios also offer 45-minute and 90-minute formats. Lift 45 strength classes are 45 minutes.
What is a Lift 45 class?
Lift 45 is a 45-minute strength-focused class with no treadmill. It’s all floor work with heavier weights, lower reps, and more rest between sets. Great for members who want more dedicated strength training alongside their regular OTF classes.
Class types explainedAre the workouts the same every day at every studio?
Yes. All Orangetheory studios worldwide follow the same daily workout template. A Strength day in New York is the same template as a Strength day in Los Angeles. The coach may adjust pacing, but the exercises and structure are identical.
Can I see tomorrow’s workout in advance?
OTF doesn’t officially release workouts ahead of time, but the community shares early intel from studios in earlier time zones. We publish daily intel breakdowns as soon as they’re available.

What are splat points?
Splat points equal minutes spent in the Orange (84–91% max HR) or Red (92–100% max HR) heart rate zones. OTF recommends earning 12–20 splat points per class to trigger the “afterburn” effect (EPOC).
Splat points explainedDo I need to buy a heart rate monitor?
Yes, you need one for every class. Your first class includes a free loaner. After that, you can purchase an OTbeat monitor ($79–$129) or rent one per class ($5–$10). The OTbeat Link connects to Apple Watch if you already own one.
HRM comparisonMy heart rate seems wrong during class. What should I do?
Several things can affect readings: monitor placement (too loose or in wrong position), dehydration, caffeine, medication, or an inaccurate max HR formula. Talk to your studio about getting your max HR recalibrated based on your actual performance data.
Heart rate zones guideHow many calories does an OTF class burn?
Calorie burn varies significantly by body weight, fitness level, and effort. Typical ranges are 400–800 calories for a 60-minute class. The OTF system also estimates additional “afterburn” calories from EPOC. Take calorie estimates as rough approximations, not exact numbers.
Benchmarks
What are OTF benchmarks?
Benchmarks are periodic fitness tests that let you measure your progress. Major benchmarks include the 12-minute run for distance, 200m row, 500m row, 2000m row, 1-mile run, and the Dri Tri. Results are tracked in the OTF app so you can compare over time.
Benchmark guidesWhat is the Dri Tri?
The Dri Tri is OTF’s signature fitness challenge: a 2,000m row, 300 body-weight reps on the floor, and a 5K run on the treadmill — all back-to-back. There’s also a Sprint version at half the distance. It runs seasonally (usually spring and fall).
Dri Tri prep guideHow often do benchmarks happen?
Major benchmarks (12-minute run, 200m row) typically occur every 2–3 months. The Dri Tri runs 1–2 times per year. Benchmark days are announced in advance so you can prepare. Your studio will post the schedule.
